Environment Minister promotes Wales’ sustainable development policies abroad

Environment and Sustainable Development Minister, John Griffiths is in Canada this week to promote and develop Wales’ work on sustainable development and climate change.
Tuesday 30 August 2011

The Minister will attend a meeting of the nrg4SD (the network of regional governments for sustainable development), a network that was co-founded by Wales following the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002.

The network has been developed to promote the role of sub-national and regional governments in helping to ensure that people around the world adopt a more sustainable way of living, in order to protect the world’s precious resources.

Speaking about his attendance at the meeting, the Environment Minister said:

“Wales is one of the few places in the world to have a legal obligation to promote sustainable development, and I am pleased to have the opportunity to speak to regions from around the world about the work we are doing in Wales to embed sustainability into all our government programmes and policies. This includes work such as our strategic energy programme, arbed, which was designed to address environmental, social and economic challenges in a joined up way.

“I will be working hard to build links with regions from across the globe so that we can ensure the exchange of  best practice. This will allow us not only to share the information and experience we are constantly developing here in Wales but also to learn from the experiences of others, so we can ensure we are all approaching these crucial issues in the best possible way.”

The meeting will cover a range of issues including sustainable development,  work to tackle climate change, the protection of biodiversity and the protection and sanitation of water supplies.

The Minister’s attendance at the meeting is part of the Welsh Government’s commitment to ensure that Wales continues to play its part on the world stage in promoting sustainable development and acts and as exemplar to other smaller states and regions.

Nrg4SD is made up of  50 sub-national governments from 30 countries   and 7 associations of sub-national governments. Altogether, nrg4SD represents around 600 territories in the World.

Whilst in Quebec the Minister will also be meeting individually with Minister’s and officials from Brittany, Quebec and Catalonia to speak in more detail about their ongoing work and opportunities for joint working.
