Teeing up for global success after 2013 PGA show

Export deals and new business secured at World’s biggest golf show.
Wednesday 20 February 2013

Visit Wales and their stand partners, Asbri and Celtic Manor Resort, attended the 60th PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida last month and partners are already reaping the rewards of attending the exhibition.

Asbri, the Caerphilly based  golf accessory company who were Official Licensee’s to The 2010 Ryder Cup at the Celtic Manor, already export to over 20 countries worldwide but the recent overseas trade mission has secured even greater export business for the coming season.

Paul Williams, Sales & Marketing Director added,

“It’s been a hugely successful show for us yet again and the response to some of our new products has been overwhelming. Despite the difficult economic climate last year we still achieved an increase on our turnover of 7% in 2012 which really bucks the trend of the industry. This week we have secured new partnerships in the USA, Canada, New Zealand and even processed orders from Columbia and Costa Rica! With follow-up meetings with new partners in the US, we are confident these new export deals could significantly increase our sales again through 2013.”

The Welsh company formed in 2003, first exhibited at the show in 2005 as a joint venture with Ryder Cup Wales and Visit Wales. Now, in their 9th year of exhibiting alongside global golf giants such as Titleist, Taylormade and Puma to name a few, the company has built up a reputation as one of Europe’s leading logo accessory brands.
Eryl Williams, Managing Director commented,

“The PGA Merchandise Show is by far the most important dates in our diary. It gives us the opportunity to sit down with existing distributors and present new ranges to them as well as meeting new customers. It’s been a very difficult season for the golf industry, particularly in the UK with such extreme weather conditions so our export business where there is all year round golf is becoming of significant importance. The partnership and valuable support at the show with Visit Wales gives us much greater stand presence and is definitely a secret to our success.”

The Celtic Manor Resort, which hosted Wales' first Ryder Cup in 2010, has exhibited at the PGA Merchandise Show in partnership with Visit Wales since 2008 and continues to build on the legacy of being in the spotlight of the sporting world at golf's greatest team tournament.

Golf Services Manager Peter Smyth said:

"The Ryder Cup really put Celtic Manor and Wales on the world's golfing map and it was great to return to the PGA Merchandise Show and meet so many Americans and golf industry professionals from all over the world who hold such fond memories of The Ryder Cup that was held here. Once again, we established a good number of strong leads with US tour operators and golf professionals who are keen to bring groups of golfers to Wales and play the Twenty Ten Course which provided such an exciting and dramatic stage for that unforgettable Ryder Cup climax in 2010.

"The Ryder Cup legacy has helped us grow all aspects of our business at Celtic Manor, resulting in record years for revenue and profit in 2012, but it's always important to keep building our overseas markets and the PGA Merchandise Show gives us the greatest possible opportunity to reach golf travel organisers in North America."

Business, Enterprise, Technology and Science Minister, Edwina Hart said:

“Attendance at this key event provides a platform for Visit Wales and stand partners to raise the profile of Wales as a golf destination with US consumers, tour operators and media.
"Continuing with the work which was done in the lead up to the Ryder Cup is important as we turn our sights to hosting The Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex which will be played in Wales for the first time in July 2014 at the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club.”

The number of visitors to the Visit Wales stand were more than a 1000 this year, clearly showing that there is still a strong interest in the US market for golf in Wales.
