New boost to Welsh transport infrastructure

Transport Minister, Carl Sargeant, will today (Thursday 1 December) visit the site of a £1m highway construction scheme at the M4 Junction 32 Coryton Interchange.

The Minister will be shown how Welsh Government capital funding is being used to further improve the transport infrastructure in Wales as a new dedicated lane for traffic leaving the M4 east bound and heading north on the A470 trunk road is constructed.

When finished, the new lane will be a further improvement to the Welsh transport infrastructure – reducing queuing, improving traffic flows and increasing safety.

The Welsh Government’s commitment to enhancing the local road network in Wales is also demonstrated by a new initiative to boost local authority borrowing to invest in highways improvements over the next few years.

This initiative – enabled by additional funding from the Welsh Government to free up local authority income to finance prudential borrowing – could provide investment of up to £170million.

Carl Sargeant said,

“As a result of close collaboration between the Welsh Government and local authorities we will see a significant increase in their ability to fund major improvements to our highways targeting the existing network or through projects similar to that being undertaken today at Coryton interchange.”

“This in turn will improve the condition of our roads, reduce travel times and by reducing potholes increase safety for motorists and cyclists.  We should also see a significant saving for local authorities as the number of legal claims decrease.

“This new investment will also be providing the Welsh economy with a considerable and much needed shot in the arm in terms of jobs in the construction sector.”

Andrew Morgan, Chair of the South East Wales Transport Alliance, (Sewta) which co-ordinates transport strategy, plans and programmes for the 10 councils of South East Wales said,

“This announcement is a very positive move.

“Local authorities have for sometime been canvassing the Welsh Government through the Welsh Local Government Association to provide additional funding to improve the highways infrastructure.

“I’m sure all local authorities are now looking at the details of these proposals and look forward eagerly to working  to achieve through this initiative what would be a huge  investment and bring much needed improvements to our highway network.

“Improving the condition of our local road network is something high on the public’s agenda and I am pleased to see the Welsh Government has recognised this."
