Rhodri Glyn Thomas, Minister for Heritage and Meri Huws, Chair of the Welsh Language Board, at the National Eisteddfod

The purpose of the review is to obtain a clear and comprehensive picture of the state of the printed Welsh medium press in Wales and to look at how the Welsh Assembly Government can implement the recommendation of the One Wales accord in a sustainable way. The One Wales accord is committed to strengthening support to Welsh language newspapers and magazines, including a daily newspaper.

The review will run along side discussions with organisation that have an interest in the Welsh language press.

The review will be presented to the Minister before Christmas.

Rhodri Glyn Thomas said:

I am very eager to have a detailed examination of the present state of the Welsh language press in order to understand how we can move forward in realising the One Wales Government’s commitment to supporting the Welsh language press, including a Welsh language daily newspaper.

Meri Huws the Chair of the Welsh Language Board said:

I’m looking forward to working in partnership with the Assembly Government in order to understand what the requirements are of publishers of weekly and monthly papers, and just as importantly, what the needs and aspirations of the readers of the Welsh medium press.

We have agreed as a Board to try to complete this by the end of the year.
