Discrete PSE sessions

In the primary school, timetabled PSE lessons provide a focus for particular aspects of PSE, for example sex and relationships education. Regular planned PSE activities, such as Circle Time sessions, also develop personal and social skills.

Secondary schools should consider a commitment to timetabled discrete PSE provision. This guaranteed PSE ‘core’ complements the contributions of other subjects. PSE sessions might be delivered by a team of staff in a designated curriculum slot, or by form tutors to their registration groups.

Special schools dealing with pupils with more complex needs may use an integrated approach, using a range of subjects as age-appropriate contexts for the teaching of PSE as well as discrete teaching of skills to meet individual needs.
