Evidence for the Equality of Opportunity Committee Inquiry into Discrimination against Older People in Relation to Employment

The Minister for Social Justice and Local Government and the Deputy First Minister and Minister for Economy and Transport have agreed to attend the above Inquiry to be scrutinised.

The Minister for Social Justice and Local Government has been asked to send a letter to the Chair of the Equality of Opportunity Committee outlining the action taken by the Welsh Assembly Government since the publication of its Strategy for Older People in Wales in 2003.

The Deputy First Minister and Minister for Economic Development and Transport has been asked to send a letter to the Chair of the Equality of Opportunity Committee outlining the action taken by the Welsh Assembly Government since the publication of its Strategy for Older People in Wales in 2003.

The Equality of Opportunity Committee (EOC) is conducting an inquiry into discrimination against older people in relation to employment.  Both Ministers have been invited to provide a paper on actions taken in relation to their portfolios.  In addition, they have been invited to attend the Committee from 9.15 - 10.00 a.m. on Tuesday 30 June 2009 in order to be scrutinised.

The EOC has agreed to focus on:  
• Identifying some key areas of concern regarding discrimination against older people in relation to employment; and,

• scrutinising each Welsh Minister with powers and responsibilities which impact on older people, on the employment related outcomes of actions taken by the Welsh Assembly Government since the publication of its Strategy for Older People in Wales in 2003, particularly with regard to the key areas of concern identified by the Committee.
