Approval of final draft of National Literacy Programme for publication

The Minister for Education and Skills has agreed the final draft of the National Literacy Programme for publication.

The Minister for Education and Skills has been asked to agree the final draft of the National Literacy Programme for publication.

The 20 point action plan committed the Welsh Government to developing a National Literacy Programme for Wales. The National Literacy Programme focuses on improving literacy standards for learners between the ages of 5 and 14.

On 18 October 2011, Cabinet were provided with a paper updating them on the National Literacy Programme. The paper highlighted that the purpose of the National Literacy Programme is to set out clearly the actions that will be taken by the Welsh Government, and our partners, to achieve a step-change in standards in literacy over the next five years. Cabinet welcomed the update.

Section 14 of the Education Act 2002 provides for Welsh Ministers to make payments for the purpose of: the promotion of learning or research; and the provision of any form of training for teachers or non-teaching staff.
