Claims and new offers under the Broadband Support Scheme

The Minister for Business, Enterprise, Technology and Science has approved the issuing of grant offer letters to 77 new scheme applicants and payments to 41 claimants. The Minister also delegated authority for the approval of claims relating to projects within her constituency to the Director General for Business, Enterprise, Technology and Science.

The Broadband Support Scheme was launched in July 2010, with the fundamental objective of tackling broadband notspots in Wales. The scheme provides up to £1,000 to residents, businesses and third sector organisations located in broadband notspots (defined as sub-2Mbps connectivity) to obtain a broadband connection using the most appropriate technology available.

In this submission, the Minister for Business, Enterprise, Technology and Science has been asked to:
• Approve the issuing of grant offer letters to 77 new scheme applicants, totalling £65,589.04; and
• Approve payments to 41 claimants (from pre-existing grant offers) that have been submitted, totalling £35,891.59.

Telecommunications Policy is a reserved matter. The relevant legal powers are Section 60(1) of the Government of Wales Act 2006 together with Section 1(2), 1(3)d and 1(7)f of the Welsh Development Agency Act 1975. Those powers are powers of the Welsh Ministers.
