Funding for the Hay Festival's digitisation project

The First Minister agreed to provide financial assistance of up to £50,000 to support Hay Festival’s digitisation project which aims to extend the reach of this Signature Event to new audiences through new and emerging digital media platforms.

The Hay Festival is the largest literary festival in Wales and is consistently regarded as one of the most successful in the UK.  In 2011, the Festival attracted over 200,000 visitors.  In 2012, the Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary.

The First Minister has been asked to provide financial assistance to support Hay Festival’s digitisation project which aims to extend the reach of the festival to new national and international audiences.    
   
Section 61(j) of the Government of Wales Act 2006 permits the Welsh Ministers to do anything which they consider appropriate to support cultural activities and projects relating to Wales. Section 70(1) permits the Welsh Ministers to give financial assistance to any person (this includes companies) engaged in any activity which they consider will secure, or help to secure, the attainment of any objective which they aim to attain in the exercise of any of their functions.
