Date of decision / Dyddiad y penderfyniad:

30 April 2012

Statement of information / Datganiad gwybodaeth:

The theme of the 2013 RHS Chelsea Flower Show is to be 100 Years of Plant Science. The Food & Environment Research Agency (“FERA”), the Welsh Government, the Scottish Government and key stakeholders are proposing to exhibit a show garden at the show to promote plant health, tree health and plant biosecurity.

Over the last few decades the UK has experienced increasing threats to Plant Biosecurity (agricultural, horticultural, forestry and environmental plants) as increased global trade acts as a pathway for the arrival of new organisms, with impacts potentially exacerbated by climate change and EU enlargement. This has been highlighted by the increasing number of plant disease and pathogen outbreaks, most notably in relation to trees. Such examples include: Phytophthora ramorum affecting trees, heathland plants and heritage gardens.

The proposed Chelsea show garden will be an effective way of raising public awareness of the potential impacts on plant, tree health and biosecurity issues and the Welsh Government is supporting this initiative.
