Designed to Tackle Cancer in Wales: Strategic Framework 2008-11
The Minister for Health and Social Services has agreed to publish the second Strategic Framework for 2008-11, in support of the cancer policy document, Designed to Tackle Cancer in Wales and will issue Directions to the service.

Designed to Tackle Cancer in Wales was published in December 2006 setting out the Assembly Government’s clear and specific policy aims and strategic direction to tackling cancer at a national and local level across Wales for delivery by 2015.
Key requirements up to March 2008 were published which, largely reflected work that was already underway or planned. Regional Offices have reported that the March 2008 targets have been largely achieved with a small remainder on target for completion within the first quarter of 2008/09. Some of the key achievements are set out below:
• Cancer waiting times targets are now in the main routinely achieved
• A National Screening Programme for bowel cancer has been developed and is due to commence in October 2008.
• Smoking has been banned in public places
• Diagnostic and radiotherapy treatment equipment is being updated and modernised
• All cancer teams are using CaNISC where systems have been developed
• The All Wales Care Pathway for the Last Days of Life is routinely being delivered to all providers
A second Strategic Framework setting requirements for the period 2008-11 to direct and guide activity at both a national and local level has been prepared.
The Cancer Services Co-ordinating Group is producing a document to underpin the Strategic Framework that sets out a detailed context to the key requirements, supported by evidence and epidemiological trends. This document will be dynamic in nature and reviewed regularly and updated and will be available on the CSCG website.
