The aim of the two projects was to demonstrate how Operational Research techniques can help policymakers and practitioners make better decisions. In particular, how systems or services can be improved, or options tested for delivering a new service.

Direct access to a midwife

This project compared the current situation, where a proportion of pregnant women access their midwife as the first point of contact with maternity services and the remaining proportion access their GP, with what would happen if every pregnant woman went to the midwife when first accessing care.

Teledermatology

Release date: 31 January 2014

This project compared the Hywel Dda teledermatology clinic service with the hospital outpatient appointment system to identify any differences in terms of patient travel time and distance, overall cost and, using simulation models, the elapsed time patients spent in the system.
