Teachers in service, vacancies and sickness absence

An annual report which presents data from local authorities on teachers in service and teaching vacancies.

The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 14 June 2012.

Key points

Teachers in service with local authorities (LAs)

  • There were 27,310 full-time equivalent teachers in service with LAs, an increase of 333 since January 2012.

Teacher vacancies

  • The total number of teacher vacancies in nursery, primary and secondary schools was lower in January 2013 (86) compared with January 2012 (93).
  • The total nursery, primary and secondary vacancy rate is 0.3 per cent.

Teacher sickness absence

  • 60 per cent of teachers took sickness absence during 2012, compared with 59 per cent during 2011.
  • The average annual number of sick-days per teacher taking sickness absence was 11 days.
