Expansion marks new era for M&A Engineering

A £1m investment in a new purpose designed manufacturing facility marks the start of a new era for a highly specialised engineering company that is based in West Wales, but works around the world.

M&A Engineering is one of a small number of companies in the UK that specialise in on-site, in-situ machining.

Customers utilise the service M&A provide when the equipment that needs repairing or replacing is too large, too heavy, or too expensive to remove and repair off site. Quick turn around times and precision machining for repairs or modifications is often a driving factor for the clients who use M&A.

It often means working in very difficult and confined spaces and M&A, which works primarily in the petro chemical and marine sectors, has to design or adapt equipment for specific projects.

Their new 10,000 sq ft facility on a two acre site at Priory Park, Thornton, Milford Haven, is currently being fitted out and will significantly increase the company's capacity and allow greater flexibility for workshop based activities and contract work.

The expansion is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government through the Single Investment Fund and will enable M&A to purchase a range of specialised milling and boring equipment to provide enhanced engineering services to clients.

Ieuan Wyn Jones, Minister for the Economy and Transport, said the Single Investment Fund was created to help small and large businesses in Wales access the necessary funds to help them grow and become more competitive.

"The Fund is proving to be particularly important for businesses in the current climate and I am pleased to that the Assembly Government has been able to support the expansion by M&A Engineering. "

M&A's new headquarters, which will house the company's offices, workshops, warehousing and training department, will be officially opened in November when local companies will be invited to view the facilities.

Managing Director Jon Mortimer said the investment in the new facility was a significant milestone for the company which has recently been re-branded and is embarking on a major marketing drive.

"We have completely outgrown our current facility in Milford Haven which was outdated, cramped and seriously restricting our capability. We are a small company but work globally and the bespoke new facility will be equipped with specialist equipment and tooling specifically designed for our needs.

"It means we will be able to offer an even better service to our customers. We are the only company in Wales that can offer on-site, in-situ machining on the scale and to the quality that we provide. Our relocation means that we can be more diverse and also provide a much wider service to local businesses in the energy and petro chemical industries."

Their global client base includes Chevron Texaco and Total Oil Refineries and projects can range from simple flange face repairs on an oil refinery to complex engine repairs on ships.

An example includes the precise in-situ machining repairs to the seals on a decompression unit on board the Bibby Aquamarine to ensure a gas tight seal.

A recent project - which is also one of their largest - was to design, manufacture, and utilise, six specialised pipe profile machines for a deep sea natural gas pipeline off Nova Scotia.

Seven employees took seven weeks to carry out the machining operation for ILVA S.p.A at their plant in Taranto southern Italy.
