To fully understand the development in each site, an approach based around individual qualitative interviews and discussion groups was used.

Seeking to improve support given to families, where parental substance misuse problems affect child welfare.

It also seeks to improve the quality of child and adult services across Wales.

National evaluation

An evaluation of the effectiveness of Integrated Family Support Services (IFSS) in the three pioneer areas (Newport, Merthyr/Rhondda-Cynon-Taff and Wrexham) is being undertaken by SQW Ltd. SQW provides research, analysis and advice on sustainable economic and social development.  

An interim evaluation report was published in September 2012. A further interim report is due in Spring 2013 and a final evaluation report in Autumn 2013.

Inspection programmes

IFSS is part of the Care and Social Services Inspectorate for Wales (CSSIW) and Health Inspectorate Wales (HIW) performance and inspection programmes.

SSIA was set up to support local authorities, speed up improvement and promote excellence within social services.
