The project will support the One Wales commitment to substantially increase the number of people undertaking apprenticeships in West Wales and the Valleys.

Modern Skills Diploma (MSD) is an employment based programme for employed learners. It provides opportunities for learners to improve their skills and knowledge at level 4.

Where possible learners will follow:

  • an existing Modern Skills Diploma framework or a Modern Apprenticeship framework at level 4; or
  • the alternative Modern Skills Diploma learning option of a level 4 qualification plus a Welsh Government approved knowledge based qualification at level 4.

This project will prioritise European Social Fund (ESF) support at  level 4 towards Modern Apprenticeships in growth sectors and those skills and sectors of economic significance.

How do they apply?

Non-employed individuals can be referred to the programme by Careers Wales or Jobcentre plus. However training providers can also work with employers to recruit employed individuals directly onto the programme.

Further information can be found at the careerswales website

The Apprenticeship Matching Service (AMS) is also being developed as part of the European project and is being piloted in Gwynedd, Anglesey, Swansea and Neath Port Talbot from July 2010.  The website links careers, training providers and employers and lists apprenticeship vacancies allowing applications to be completed on-line.

Programme Targets

It is anticipated the project will support 1,437 participants from West Wales and the Valleys.
