How we regulate qualifications

It’s our responsibility, as the regulator in Wales, to ensure that all learners get the results they deserve and that their qualifications are correctly valued and understood, now and in the future. We primarily do this by evaluating qualifications, and the organisations that award them, against nationally established criteria.

We formally recognise awarding organisations by checking that they have adequate resources to award their qualifications.

Together with the regulators in England and Northern Ireland, we run an accreditation system that ensures the qualifications, awarded by recognised organisations, meet the criteria appropriate for their type, level and subject.

Once qualifications have been accredited, we make sure that awarding organisations carry out their roles correctly and that qualification standards are the same each year.

For general qualifications in particular, we monitor the questions set and examiners’ marking.
