The requirements for geography at Key Stages 2 and 3 are set out in ‘Geography in the national curriculum for Wales’. This document contains the programmes of study for each key stage, together with attainment targets and level descriptions.

Subject guidance

‘Geography: guidance for Key Stages 2 and 3’ provides key messages about teaching, learning and progression in geography. The material includes profiles of learners’ work at Key Stages 2 and 3, which exemplify the standards set out in the level descriptions and illustrate how to use level descriptions to make best-fit judgements at the end of the key stage.

Skills across the curriculum

The revised curriculum has a clearer focus on the needs of learners and the process of learning. It also gives fuller attention to the development and application of skills. To help schools deliver the revised curriculum, a non-statutory ‘Skills Framework for 3 to 19-year-olds in Wales’ has been developed. This framework defines the range of skills that learners aged 3-19 should develop, and provides guidance about continuity and progression in developing thinking, communication, number and ICT.

Documents, which track these skills across each subject, have been produced to assist teachers in their curriculum planning.

Learning across the curriculum

The revised curriculum identifies three areas of learning; they are knowledge and understanding of Wales, personal and social development and well-being, and awareness of the world of work, and learners should be given opportunities to develop and apply these across the curriculum.

Documents, which track these areas of learning across each subject, have been produced to assist teachers in their curriculum planning.
