Food and drink in schools

Student eating healthily
There is general recognition and agreement that the provision of food and drink in schools needs to change; however what is critical is how we introduce and manage that change successfully. This section explains the initiatives and policies associated with the improvement of food in schools, and the support available to non working families through free school meals.

Increasing levels of childhood obesity and its impact on well being is a concern for everyone, especially in relation to reducing health inequalities. Poor diet is a major contributing factor. Because of this we are taking a proactive role in addressing many of the issues. This includes work through our Appetite for Life Action Plan, which sets out the strategic direction and actions required to improve the nutritional standards of food and drink provided throughout the school day.

Our primary school free breakfast initiative, and the School Milk Scheme, are an integral part of our food in schools agenda.
