PLASC was originally introduced to replace the aggregate STATS1 collection from all maintained schools that took place in January.

The name 'PLASC' has been retained to describe the statutory collections of school information and pupil details, characteristics and curriculum. The main collection still takes place in January, from nursery, primary, secondary and special schools.

In addition there are 2 collections, in the autumn and summer terms, from schools providing post-16 education. The Post-16 data, including course data for every pupil is used by the Assembly's Lifelong Learning and Skills group (formerly ELWa) to inform the new National Planning and Funding System (NPFS).

In just the first year, the greater accuracy of data allowed the Assembly and local authorities to identify over 500 duplicate pupil records. This enables funding to be more fairly distributed to areas where it is really needed. The improved range and quality of the PLASC data supports many of the National Assembly for Wales policy decisions.
