'skills competition' Wales has been introduced to support and raise the profile of skills competitions within Wales. It will do so by promoting excellence amongst skilled trainees and apprentices across Wales. 'skills competition' Wales will give your organisation support to run competitions and help align the standards to those expected by World Skills UK.

Skills Competitions

WorldSkills, held every two years, is the biggest skills competition in the world. It allows participants to compete at world class standards in over 45 skills categories ranging from cabinet making to web design.

For all the young people who take part it is an invaluable, unique learning experience. Many of the competitors go on to act as ambassadors for their skills and promote excellence in vocational education and training in their own countries.

Competing at the highest level in a WorldSkills competition builds the skills and confidence of competitors, leading to better career prospects and personal development. For employers of a competitor, their support for the competition is proven to attract an increased number of highly skilled job applicants to the business.

The next international WorldSkills Competition, which you could be part of takes place in London, UK in 2011. Staged a year before the 2012 Olympics, from 5th to 8th October, the WorldSkills London 2011 Competition will provide an unparalleled opportunity to focus world attention on events in London and the UK, and create a synergy of excellence in sport and vocational skills.

High skill levels are vital to the success of the Welsh economy and are a key part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s strategy to help businesses to grow, develop and compete profitably.

Competitions are not only about finding the 'best', but are about taking part and allowing people to improve their skills and learn from others. Competitions are designed to test individuals against standards for work, now and in the future.

For the individual, the rewards can be fantastically self satisfying. For employers, highly adept employees contribute to the success and profitability of the company.
