The aim of the study is to improve upon previous estimates of the proportion of farmers in Wales who are currently protecting their sheep from scab. This will generate prevalence data that will improve the economic estimates of the cost of non-treatment to the livestock industry in Wales.

Sheep scab is a significant welfare issue for infected sheep and has cost implications for Welsh industry.  Due to the high number of sheep movements, it is difficult to determine the prevalence of sheep scab in Wales.  However, feedback indicates that it is high.

The Welsh Assembly Government has supported a study by the School of the Environment, Natural Resources and Geography at Bangor University.  The report itself aims to improve on the previous estimates of the proportion of farmers in Wales who are currently protecting their sheep from scab.  It is envisaged that the resulting prevalence data will assist in improving the economic estimates of the cost of non-treatment to the livestock sector in Wales.
