Working with communities and the third sector

The Sector Action Highlights document was published in September 2011.

To meet our climate change targets we need real and lasting change at a grassroots level, in our communities.

We need individuals and communities to play their part in making some big and urgent changes. These changes include how we travel, manage our land, heat our homes and develop skills that build our economy.

Third (voluntary) sector groups and organisations have an important role to play. They can support the work that is taking place in communities across Wales and encourage more groups to take action.

Communities also have a fundamental role in enabling people to prepare for the unavoidable impacts of climate change. This will include helping vulnerable community members prepare for extreme weather events and making community buildings to more resilient to future weather conditions.

You can find out more in the Third Sector Action Highlights document available on the right.

Community networks

We support the development of networks to help communities and groups share ideas and work together. To do this, we coordinate Sustainable Futures networks which share good practice on climate change and sustainable development.

Time Banking project

We are piloting Time Banking, which is a technique which can encourage communities and organisations to exchange their skills and knowledge.  The pilot involves organisations in South West Wales, and has attracted support from many interested organisations.

Spice, a time banking organisation, is managing the project. More information is available on their website.

More information on the action that communities are already taking is on our Wales Carbon Footprint site.
