Biodiversity is the variety of plants and animals we share the planet with and the places they live.

The ecosystems they make up are our life support system which provides us with all our food and medicines and ensures that we have clean air, clean water and fertile soils.

2010 was the International Year of Biodiversity and countries across the world took action to raise awareness of biodiversity and the importance of protecting it.

What you can do

Here are our 5 top tips so you can protect Welsh biodiversity:

  • Volunteer with a local environmental group such as BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers), Groundwork, Keep Wales Tidy or RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds);
  • Grow your own flowers or your own veg;
  • Join a wildlife group such as Butterfly Conservation, your local Wildlife Trust or a local bat group;
  • Get out and enjoy the countryside and pick up litter when you see it;
  • Find out more about the nature around you by visiting your local library, park or nature reserve.

What we are doing

We work closely with the Wales Biodiversity Partnership (WBP). The WBP is made up of key individuals and organisations from the public, private and voluntary sectors. WBP provide leadership and expertise on priorities for action on biodiversity in Wales and promote and monitor the delivery those actions.

We are developing a Natural Environment Framework called A Living Wales. The framework will have a stronger focus on sustainable land and marine management in Wales. For more information, including how to get involved, please visit our Living Wales pages under the related links on the right.
