How can very noisy areas be improved?

Action plans contain information and guidance to the process of managing environmental noise.
This consultation on quiet and priority areas ends on 05 May 2011.
There is rarely a quick, easy and affordable solution to environmental noise problems. Where resources are available, the most appropriate action will vary from case to case.

Environmental noise can be reduced at source, through quieter road surfaces, reduced traffic flows, railway maintenance, silencers on industrial equipment and other means.

After the noise has been emitted, it may be prevented from reaching local residents by an obstacle such as a noise barrier. These can be expensive and unsightly. Environmental noise impacts can also be reduced through improved sound insulation on the exposed sides of homes, and by placing bedrooms on the quieter side of a building. More examples can be found in the environmental noise action plans (see related link).

In areas of high road traffic noise and poor air quality, measures to address one issue should consider the other and plans be integrated where possible.
