Wales’ overarching waste strategy document Towards Zero Waste, sets a target of 70 per cent recycling by 2025. We can make the biggest environmental impact by focusing on preventing certain types of waste.

We must prevent the waste of materials which have the greatest impact on our ecological footprint (a way of measuring the impact we have on the environment). These are:

  • food waste;
  • paper and cardboard;
  • wood;
  • metals; and
  • plastic.

We also need to stop using or replace materials that cannot be recycled where possible.
