The Food Policy and Strategy Unit is responsible for developing policies, implementing legislation, and monitoring action plans which help to develop the food industry in Wales.

The Food Policy & Strategy Unit has developed a food strategy for Wales. We did this in conjunction with stakeholders in industry and our Food and Drink Advisory Partnership (FDAP). Food for Wales, Food from Wales sets out a wide ranging vision of the place of food in Wales. It aims to develop a clear direction for the Welsh food industry to grow over the next 10 years. It is founded on principles of sustainable development, which include economic, social and environmental aspects of the production and consumption of food.

It provides the basis for an integrated approach to food policy in Wales by taking into consideration cross-cutting issues such as:

  • health
  • food culture and education
  • food security
  • environmental sustainability
  • community development

This integrated approach is intended to build resilience in the food system and to encourage a stronger food economy in Wales. This it will enhance the capabilities and capacities of food businesses to compete effectively both at home and abroad.
