The agency was formed on 1 April 2011, following the merger of Animal Health and the Veterinary Laboratories Agency.

Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA) is an executive agency working on behalf of:

  • The Welsh Government;
  • The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA); and
  • The Scottish Government. 

Their role is to safeguard animal health and welfare as well as public health. They also protect the economy and enhance food security through research, surveillance and inspection.

There are two AHVLA offices in Wales:
