Awareness

We aim to raise public awareness of the health protections that breastfeeding gives babies, such as more protection from:

  • gastro-enteritis
  • chest and ear infections
  • diabetes
  • allergies and other illnesses.

Mothers, too, have more protection from some cancers and from weak bones in later life.

Follow the links to your local breastfeeding group and get in touch to find out more details of activities in your area.

Breastfeeding awareness week

Each year, the Welsh Assembly Government aims to draw special attention to the importance of breastfeeding during National Breastfeeding Awareness Week.

Health professionals and mother supporters are encouraged to organise local events that will start people thinking about what breastfeeding could mean for them and their babies.

If you’re a health professional involved in promoting breastfeeding, contact us for some promotional materials, including posters, banners, bibs and pens -  breastfeeding@wales.gsi.gov.uk.
