The Neuroscience Review

The Welsh Neuroscience Review Group, led by James Steers reviewed the current provision of adult neuroscience services including spinal and stroke services in Wales.  He recommended a future model for a high quality, safe and sustainable adult neuroscience service.  Three sets of recommendations were published, relating to All Wales, North Wales and Mid and South Wales.

The Implementation planning groups in Mid and South Wales and North Wales were asked to determine how the Steers’ recommendations should be implemented in their region. Local Health Boards (LHB) have now been asked to work together to implement the reports

Report of the Task & Finish Group on Care Pathways for Long term neurological conditions

In 2008 a Task and Finish Group was established to propose care pathways for long term neurological conditions.

The group undertook a review of the available literature and sought information on what was currently going on in Wales.  Particular attention was given to Parliamentary reports on Parkinson’s Disease and Muscular Dystrophy to ensure that the issues raised were addressed. The report has now been published and the Assembly Government has accepted all the recommendations.

LHB have been asked to develop primary, secondary, tertiary and community services in line with the principles set out in the Task and Finish Group’s report. Over time, the aim should be to develop services further between NHS Wales and LHB.
