Renal Disease

In April 2007 the Welsh Assembly Government published the document Designed to Tackle Renal Disease in Wales: A Policy Statement and National Service Framework (NSF).

The NSF document sets out the strategic direction for renal services and provides a framework to support all activity.  It will help guide commissioners and providers, working in partnership, to transform the planning, organisation and delivery of renal services in Wales. It is aimed at improving the quality of care for people with or at risk from renal disease. This approach is part of the Assembly Government’s efforts to achieve its vision for world class health and social care service as set out in Designed for Life, published in May 2005.

The NSF is made up of a number of different standards which will cover the whole range of care for both children and adults. The standards are based on the best available evidence, against which the quality and effectiveness of care will be measured.

The Welsh Renal Managed Clinical Network is now responsible for planning and securing renal dialysis services. It was formally established on 1 April 2010 as a sub-committee of the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee (WHSCC). It replaces the Renal Advisory Group and the two Renal Network Boards.
