Some occupations and lifestyle behaviours can put people at risk of certain diseases. For these people vaccinations may be available.

Advice can be given by contacting your general practitioner or NHS Direct Wales regarding personal risks and whether vaccination is advisable.

For people with certain medical conditions or if you are over 65 there is a free vaccination against influenza and pnemococcal disease. These include:

  • a chronic chest condition (this includes asthma when
    it is serious enough to require regular medication);
  • a chronic heart condition;
  • diabetes;
  • chronic kidney disease;
  • chronic liver disease;
  • chronic neurological conditions (this includes strokes
    and multiple sclerosis);
  • lowered immunity due to disease or treatment such as steroids
    or cancer therapy;
  • some other serious medical conditions - check with your doctor
    if you are unsure.

It is in these groups of people that there is an increased risk of serious illness from these diseases.
