Mother and daughterIn September 2008, a new vaccination was introduced to protect girls and young women against the most common causes of cervical cancer in later life.

The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine was added to the routine childhood schedule for all girls in school year 8.

HPV viruses cause 99 per cent of invasive cervical cancer. The vaccine protects against the viruses responsible for about 70 per cent of cases. In Wales there are around 170 new cases of cervical cancer each year.
