'Private rented housing' means housing that is owned by a private individual, company or organisation, including some charities. About 12% of Welsh households live in privately rented housing.

The private rented sector offers a flexible form of tenure and plays an increasingly important part in meeting the housing needs of many people in Wales.

It is important that people who rent privately have access to well-managed, good quality housing. We are committed to working to improve conditions for both tenants and landlords to encourage a vibrant private rented sector in Wales.

A number of measures have already been introduced to improve the condition and management of privately rented homes. These include the licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation, the Tenancy Deposit Protection Scheme, the Housing Health and Safety Rating System and an all-Wales voluntary Landlord Accreditation Scheme.
