Social housing is provided by social landlords and rented for less than would be paid if renting privately.

The two main types of social landlord in Wales are local authorities and Registered Social Landlords.

We believe that everyone in Wales should have the opportunity to live in a good quality home within a safe and secure community. About 20% of Welsh households live in social housing. We support and encourage social landlords to provide these good quality homes.

To help raise standards social landlords are required to improve their housing to an acceptable level by 2012. The Welsh Housing Quality Standard advises social landlords how to achieve this.
