What was the problem?

Lack of an effective structure in the Community Safety Partnership (CSP) for implementing strategic vision and leadership.

What actions were taken?

An internal audit and consultation of the structures and procedures in place within the CSP was undertaken. This work resulted in changes to procedures and new sub-groups were established to ensure the delivery of the projects arising from the 2005-2008 Community Safety Strategy. The changes were:

  • A change to the membership of the former Operational Group to make it smaller and more accountable to the Executive Board. This aimed to make it more effective at driving the development of the Community Safety Strategy through the sub-groups.
  • The introduction of sub-group updates for the Operations Group to record action taken in respect of the various projects.
  • The introduction of brief (one page) monthly reports to the Executive Board from the departments and organisations comprising the Partnership.
  • Amended agendas for both the Executive Board and the Community Safety Partnership meetings. The new agendas, reflected the new style reports with changes including new headings for circulated items and new items for discussion.

What was the outcome?

The changes made resulted in:

  • enhanced communication and better understanding and awareness of the contributions of the various partner agencies
  • greatly improved partnership working and multi-agency involvement
  • streamlined processes for decision making
  • better progress towards Public Service Agreement 1 targets, identified as a clear outcome of effective partnership working.
