"The Right to be Safe" is the Welsh Government's 6 year integrated strategy for tackling all forms of violence against women and domestic abuse.

Byw Heb Ofn / Live Fear Free is the Welsh Government’s series of high profile multi-media campaigns.

It is aimed at raising awareness and challenging attitudes towards violence against women and domestic abuse in Wales.

In March 2010 the Welsh Government launched 'The Right to Be Safe', a six-year integrated strategy to for tackling all forms of violence against women and domestic abuse, together with a three-year implementation plan to support its delivery   The Strategy broadened the previous domestic abuse strategy ‘Tackling Domestic Abuse; a Partnership Approach’ which was launched in 2005.

The Right To Be Safe flags up the need to continue raising awareness and challenge attitudes to prevent violence against women and children happening in the first place. It sees this as a key component of action to change attitudes and behaviour.

The Implementation Plan contains an action to ‘Develop multi-media publicity campaigns to raise awareness of violence against women, stalking, harassment and domestic abuse, challenge attitudes and promote the national helpline’.

In line with that action the Welsh Government has run a number of multi-media campaigns to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of domestic abuse, ensure that victims are aware of the help available to them, and to publicise the Domestic Abuse Helpline.

The increase is use of digital media has meant that recent campaigns have embraced online advertising and social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, U-tube, alongside the traditional media channels. All campaigns now run under the Live Fear Free banner and are supported by the Live Fear Free website, Facebook Page and Twitter feed.

Domestic abuse is not limited to co-habiting heterosexual couples. It can occur in any relationship. It’s not just women who are victims either. Men, women and teenage children can be either the target of the abuse or the abuser.
