This guidance refers to the survey of elected councillors and unsuccessful candidates.

Under the provisions of the Local Government (Wales) Measure 2011, it must now take place at each normal local election.

Its purpose is to reveal the diversity of people who are attempting to become councillors and those who get elected so that, over time, we can see to what extent this changes, possibly in response to policy initiatives aimed at widening participation. The results of the survey, which covers county and community elections, will be collated by each county council and provided to the Welsh Government, who must publish the results within a year of the elections.
