We are committed to creating a fair and equitable Wales.
Our equality duties
The duties are set out in the Equality Act 2010 (Statutory Duties) (Wales) Regulations 2011 and came into force in April 2011.
We were the first government to bring in specific equality duties in order for public bodies to better perform their public sector equality duty.
The Act aims to ensure public authorities and those carrying out a public function consider how they can positively contribute to a fairer society in their day to day activities through paying due regard to eliminating unlawful discrimination, advancing equality of opportunity and fostering good relations.
The Regulations place duties on the devolved public sector, including Welsh Government, covering equality impact assessments, publishing and reviewing Strategic Equality Plans, engagement, pay differences, procurement, reporting arrangements and equality and employment information.
Our equality objectives have been developed to deliver real changes to the ways we work. We want to ensure the way we govern has the most effective impact on making our society fairer and more inclusive.
We engaged with individuals and organisations to develop our Equality Objectiveswhich confirmed the greatest inequalities we are trying to tackle.
Our equality objectives ensures that public services and employment are fair, accessible, responsive to people's needs, and that communities are inclusive. We want everyone to feel safe and have their chance to flourish at school and in work. People should not be put at a disadvantage by any of the following (also known as 'protected characteristics'):
- Faith or belief
- Sexual orientation
- Pregnancy and maternity
- Being married or in a civil partnership
- Being a disabled person
- Being transgender
Strategic equality plan
Our equality objectives sit within our Strategic Equality Plan and underpin our work, ensuring a joined up approach to achieving better outcomes for the people. They are reflected within the Programme for Government and dovetail closely with our Tackling Poverty Action Plan. Progress against our equality objectives is captured and reported in our annual reports on equality.
