The latest National Statistics on Farm Incomes produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 26 November 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on Farm Incomes include data for Wales for the period 2008-09. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 26 November 2008.

This release presents farm income figures based on three different measures: Farm Business Income (FBI), Net Farm Income (NFI) and Cash Income.  The figures are from the annual Farm Business Survey.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • Farm Incomes for ‘All Farm Types’ increased between 2007/08 and 2008/09, with Farm Business Income up 18%.
  • Strong commodity prices and higher average Single Farm Payments combined to generate increased farm incomes on Dairy, Less Favoured Area (LFA) Cattle & Sheep and Lowland Cattle & Sheep farms.
  • On Mixed Cropping and Livestock farms an increase in output was outweighed by higher input costs resulting in a 6% decline in FBI between 2007/08 and 2008/09.
