The latest statistics on Aggregate Agricultural Output and Income produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 18 February 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on Aggregate Agricultural Output and Income include data for Wales for the period up to the end of December 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 24 February 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • Total Income from Farming (TIFF) is estimated to have increased by 60 per cent, from £106.5 million in 2008 to £170.3 million in 2009.
  • The value of agricultural output in Wales in 2009 remained broadly unchanged at approximately £1.1billion.  There was an increase in the value of output in the cattle and sheep sectors but a reduction in the value of output from the dairy sector.
  • Intermediate Consumption fell by 3 per cent, as the price of key agricultural inputs such as feed, fertiliser and fuel decreased from the high levels experienced in 2008.
  • The depreciation of sterling against the euro was the main factor in a 9% increase in subsidy payments.  Interest payment decreased as the reduction in interest rates outweighed an increase in borrowing.
