The latest National Statistics on winter livestock numbers, autumn and winter crops and stocks of fertiliser, hay and silage produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 10 March 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website These statistics provide estimates for key variables across Wales as a whole. Equivalent statistics for each of the other UK countries are produced by the respective administrations  and are detailed in the release. Data for the UK as a whole were  published by DEFRA on March 11 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The number of sheep and lambs fell by 2 per cent between December 2008 and December 2009. The current total is 5.3 million.
  • The overall number of cattle and calves was almost unchanged from the December 2008 figure. For the third year, data on the numbers of cattle was drawn from the Cattle Tracing System (CTS).
  • The areas of wheat, barley and other crops all showed a significant increase on the respective areas grown in December 2008. However it also represented a return to levels observed in December 2007.
