The latest National Statistics on winter livestock numbers, autumn and winter crops and stocks of fertiliser, hay and silage produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 8 March 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website These statistics provide estimates for key variables across Wales as a whole. Equivalent statistics for each of the other UK countries are produced by the respective administrations and are detailed in the release. Data for the UK as a whole were published by DEFRA on March 10 2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The number of sheep and lambs increased by 1 per cent between December 2009 and December 2010. The current total is 5.4 million.
  • The overall number of cattle and calves was almost unchanged from the December 2009 figure.
  • The areas of wheat and barley grown both rose on their December 2009 levels with wheat increasing by 6 per cent and barley by 1 per cent.
