The latest statistics on Farm Diversification produced by the Welsh Government were released on 21st June 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

This bulletin presents farm diversification figures in Wales for 2009-10, based on results from the annual Farm Business Survey. The latest bulletin updates the statistics previously released on 24th June 2008.

In 2009-10 there were approximately 11,100 farms in Wales of a size sufficient to occupy a farmer for at least half-time. The analysis in this bulletin is concerned only with these farms.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • Approximately 24% of farms undertook diversified activity in 2009-10, compared with 20% in 2006-07. The most common diversified activity was the letting of buildings for non-farming use, which 17% of all farms engaged in.
  • The average diversified output was £7,100. Diversified output represented less than a quarter of total farm output for 99% of diversified farms in Wales.
  • Farms classified as either ‘Very Large’ or ‘Very Small’ were relatively more likely to undertake diversified activity, with more than a third of the farms in these categories doing so.
  • 29% of Lowland grazing livestock farms engaged in diversification in 2009-10, compared with 24% of LFA grazing livestock farms and 16% of Dairy farms.
