National Strategic Indicators (NSIs) are used to measure the performance of local authorities at a national level and focus on key strategic priorities.

They are collected by each local authority and audited by the Wales Audit Office.  Each indicator is aligned to one or more of the Welsh Government’s strategic priorities, and they have been chosen for their focus on outcomes.

Key results:

  • The data for 2010-11 NSIs showed a mixed picture of improvement over 2009-10 in the performance measured by the Welsh average, with an improvement in performance for thirteen indicators, with one indicator remaining unchanged and nine indicators showing a decline in performance.

Between 2009-10 and 2010-11, the Welsh average improved in:

  • three out of the eight indicators for social care;
  • two of the four indicators for housing;
  • the indicator for planning and regulatory services;
  • three out of the five indicators for education;
  • all three indicators for environment and transport; and
  • one of the two indicators for leisure and culture.

Further analysis for individual local authorities can be undertaken using the accompanying data visualisation application.
