Police Service Strength, 30 September 2008

The latest National Statistics on Police Service Strength produced by the Home Office were released on 29 January 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
UK Statistics Authority Website Provisional statistics on police strength for the police forces in England and Wales were published for the year ending 30 September 2008. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 22 July 2008 and finalised figures will be published in July 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • There were 7,488 full-time equivalent (FTE) police officers in the 4 police forces of Wales at 30 September 2008. This was a decrease of 15 officers (0.2 per cent) compared with six months earlier (March 2008) and a decrease of 58 officers (0.8 per cent) compared with a year earlier (September 2007).
  • On 30 September 2008, South Wales employed 3,251 FTE police officers; North Wales employed 1,574; Gwent employed 1,470 and Dyfed-Powys employed 1,193.
  • South Wales saw an increase of 7 officers (0.2 per cent) compared with six months earlier (March 2008), whilst Gwent had a reduction of 17 officers (1.1 per cent); North Wales’ officer strength reduced by 4 (0.3 per cent) and Dyfed-Powys had a reduction of 1 officer (0.1 per cent).
  • The total number of FTE police community support officers (PCSOs) in the 4 forces of Wales was 678. Excluding PCSOs, traffic wardens and designated officers, the number of FTE police staff was around 3,900.
