The latest analysis on crime in Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government was released on 30 July 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on police recorded crime and the British Crime Survey include data for England and Wales for the period April 2004 to March 2009.

The key points from the bulletin are:

Police recorded crime

  • The rate of total recorded crime has decreased consistently since 2004, with 2008-09 recording the lowest rate in the last 5 years.
  • All of the main offence groups had lower rates in 2008-09 than in 2004-05 except drug offences and robbery.
  • In 2008-09 the total recorded crime rate in Wales was below the rate for England and lower than six of the nine English Government Office Regions.
  • In 2008-09 one in three recorded offences was cleared up through a formal sanction.

British Crime Survey

  • After decreasing in 2007-08, the risk of being a victim of household crime in Wales remained stable in 2008 09.
  • The risk of victimisation for both personal and household crime in 2008-09 was lower in Wales than for England and Wales as a whole.
  • The estimated number of adults having used any drug in the last year for 2008-09 was 168,000.
