Public Expenditure Statistical Analyses (PESA) 2008

The latest National Statistics on public expenditure produced by HM Treasury were released on 21 April 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on public expenditure include data for all Government Office Regions in the UK for the period 2002-03 to 2007-08. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 30 April 2007.

The 2007-08 data relate to budgets and not outturn (actual expenditure) and are not designated National Statistics.

The key points for Wales for the 2007-08 budget data are:

  • Planned Identifiable Expenditure on Services in Wales in 2007-08 was £8,577 per head, 10 per cent higher per head than the UK average (£7,790 per head)
  • Wales had the fourth highest expenditure per head in the UK in 2007-08, behind Northern Ireland (£9,789), Scotland (£9,179) and London (£9,099).

The key points for Wales for the actual expenditure data are:

  • In 2006-07 spending on health was 7 per cent higher than the UK average, spending on education was 3 per cent higher then the UK average.
  • Between 2002-03 and 2006-07 spending per head in Wales has increased by 25 per cent, compared to 28 per cent in the UK.
