Quantity Measure of Education Output

The latest statistics on quantity of publicly funded education produced by the Office for National Statistics were released on 22 April 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on education quantity include data for England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales for the period 1996 until December 2007. The latest release updates the statistics previously released by the Office for National Statistics on 4 September 2007.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • For the UK as a whole publicly funded education increased by 5.3 per cent between 1996 and 2007.   In Wales, due to falling pupil numbers, the equivalent growth rate is 0.5 per cent.
  • A key driver of the growth at a UK level include a 26.2 per cent increase in the number of full time equivalent young people in further education.
  • Other drivers include an increase in the number of secondary school pupils over the period, due to an increase in the size of population aged 12 to 18.
