Quantity Measure of Children’s Social Care Output

The latest statistics on quantity of publicly funded children’s social care produced by the Office for National Statistics were released on 26 June 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on children's social care quantity include data for England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales for the period 2000-01 to 2006-07.

The key points from the latest release are:

Between 2000-01 and 2006-07:

  • Overall growth in quantity of children's social care was 22.9% for the UK and 42.4% for Wales. Wales showed higher quantity growth than England and Northern Ireland but lower than Scotland.
  • Growth in the quantity of children's social care output is higher once data from all four UK countries is incorporated compared with growth calculated using England data as a proxy for UK output. This reflects the higher growth rates in the devolved administrations.
  • Growth is higher for 'other children's social care' than it is for the measure for looked after children. For the UK as a whole, other children's social services increased by 57.3% and the number of days children are looked after increased by 1.6%. The figures for Wales were 87.6% and 17.8% respectively.
